We laid you to rest near the maple today, where you always escaped the hottest part of the afternoon. The kids brought crooked handfuls from the garden, more stems than flowers, and tucked a tennis ball beside your blue blanket. Covering you was the moment I nearly said stop. By evening the yard had already begun to look ordinary, which felt almost cruel. I stayed beside the new earth until I couldn't see the branches anymore. I told you thank you, I love you, and I'm sorry in every order I knew. Rest here, Biscuit. You are still part of this home.
