What to Do With Your Pet’s Things After They Die
A gentle way to clean, keep and care for the ordinary things they left behind—at your own pace.
You don’t have to do everything today.
But when you’re ready, caring for what they left behind can be another way of loving them.1. Start with just one thing
That’s enough.
You are simply beginning to take care of the things that once took care of part of their everyday life.
2. Think of cleaning as one last act of care
Let everything dry properly.
Not because you want to remove every trace of them.
3. Their smell may fade
This is probably the hardest part.
One day, the blanket may no longer smell like them.
And that can hurt more than you expected.
But what those things meant to you does not disappear with them.
4. Let their things stay in your life differently
Wash and dry what you want to keep
Put the collar and tag somewhere safe
Keep one favorite blanket
Place the rest in a memory box until you’re ready
You don’t have to throw anything away.
And you don’t have to keep everything exactly where it was.
That does not mean you are forgetting them.
Their smell may fade.
The house may slowly change.
But the fact that they were here does not.And neither does the love.
