The Vet Asked Me How My Dog Was Doing. I Couldn’t Answer.

I wasn’t expecting to cry there.

I had gone in for something ordinary. Then the vet looked at me and asked, almost casually, “How is he doing?”

For a second, my mind went blank.

They didn’t know.

I opened my mouth, but the words felt too heavy to say.

“He passed away.”

That was all it took.

I had said those words before. I had told family. I had answered messages. I thought I was getting better at saying them.

But something about being asked in a place where he had once stood beside me made the loss feel new again.

I remembered the waiting room. The smell of the clinic. The way he used to look at me when he was nervous.

And suddenly I wasn’t standing there alone. I was standing beside every version of us that had been there before.

Grief is strange like that. Sometimes nothing dramatic happens. Someone simply asks the wrong question at the wrong moment.

If this happens to you, you don’t need to apologize for your reaction.

You were not “doing better” and then suddenly failing.

You just walked into a place where love had left a memory.

And for a moment, the memory answered before you could.
