My Dog Food Reminder Arrived After He Died.

An ordinary pet food reminder became an unexpected grief trigger after my dog died. A short reflection on the routines that continue after loss.

My Dog Food Reminder Arrived After He Died.

My phone told me it was time to buy his food again.

For half a second, I almost clicked it.

That was the strange part.

My hand remembered before I did.

The app had calculated exactly what it was supposed to calculate: by now, the bag should have been getting low.

Except it wasn’t.

There was still food left.

And he wasn’t here to eat it.

I stared at the notification longer than I should have. It felt absurd that an algorithm still expected our old life to continue.

Buy food. Restock treats. Repeat the routine.

For years, these reminders meant I was taking care of him.

Now they were reminders that there was no one left to take care of in the same way.

I turned the notification off.

I cried after I did it.

Not because deleting a reminder was important.

Because it was one more tiny system in the world learning that he was gone.

There are so many little endings after a pet dies.

The last walk. The last bowl. The last delivery. The last reminder.

None of them are the loss itself.

But sometimes they are the moments when the loss becomes real again.
