What to Do With Your Pet’s Ashes When You’re Not Ready to Decide
When your pet’s ashes come home, people may immediately ask what you are going to do with them.
Scatter them? Keep them? Make something? Choose an urn?
You are allowed to answer:
I don’t know yet.
Start by giving them a safe place
You can simply keep the ashes in the container they came in and place them somewhere dry and secure. Nothing has to happen next.
Then give yourself time
Some people eventually scatter ashes somewhere meaningful.
Some keep them at home.
Some divide a small amount between family members.
Some build a quiet memorial around the urn.
And some do nothing for months or years.
There is no prize for deciding quickly.
You can remember them without putting the ashes inside anything
A photograph, collar, written story, online memorial or small keepsake can carry memory without physically containing ashes.
That distinction matters if you want the ashes left untouched.
For now, you can simply bring them home.
Put them somewhere that feels safe.
Sit beside them if you need to.
Move them later if the place stops feeling right.
A decision made slowly is still a decision.
And choosing to wait is also a valid way of caring for what remains.
