Why Did Pet Grief Get Worse After I Felt Better?
For a few days, I thought I was doing better.
I answered messages. I worked. I even laughed at something without immediately feeling guilty.
Then the grief came back so hard that I wondered whether I had gone backwards.
I had not.
The first days after a pet dies can be full of decisions, phone calls and practical things that have to be done. Sometimes there is also shock. When life becomes quieter again, there is finally more room to notice the absence.
That can make a later week feel harder than an earlier one.
It does not mean the calmer days were fake.
And it does not mean you are starting over.
Grief can change shape as the reality of everyday life catches up: the empty feeding time, the walk you no longer take, the place beside the bed that stays empty.
A difficult week after a better one is not proof that you are failing.
It may simply mean you have reached another part of the loss.
You are allowed to have a good day without being finished grieving.
You are also allowed to hurt again after you thought the worst had passed.
