Did My Dog Know I Loved Him When He Died?
After he died, I kept returning to one question:
Did he know how much I loved him?
My mind wanted to judge our whole life by the final day.
Was I calm enough? Did I hold him long enough? Did he understand why we were there? Should I have said more?
But love was never contained in one final conversation.
It was in the thousands of ordinary things that came before it.
Filling his bowl. Opening the door. Learning which scratch meant “keep going.” Knowing which sound meant something was wrong. Moving over in bed without even waking up. Coming home. Again and again.
A pet does not need one perfect final moment to have lived inside a loving relationship.
Maybe I will always wish I could go back and make the goodbye gentler. Grief makes us search for one last thing we could have done better.
But when I look at his whole life instead of only his death, the answer feels different.
He knew my footsteps. He knew my voice. He knew where home was.
And for years, home included me.
I cannot change the final day.
But I do not have to let one day erase all the days that taught him what love felt like.
