I’m Afraid I’ll Forget My Dog. What Should I Save?

One of the quietest fears after losing a pet is not only that they are gone.

It is that, one day, the little details might go too.

The exact sound of their bark. The nickname no one else used. The way they waited before dinner. The weight of their head against your leg.

You do not need to preserve everything. Start with the details that are hardest to replace.

Seven memories worth recording

  1. One video with sound — footsteps, a bark, a purr, even ordinary breathing.
  2. Their names and nicknames — including the ridiculous ones.
  3. One daily routine — what happened every morning or before bed.
  4. One habit that made you laugh — the thing only people who knew them would understand.
  5. A favorite place — the window, sofa corner, walking route or patch of sun.
  6. One ordinary story — not the biggest memory, just one that feels like them.
  7. A few words about how being loved by them changed you.

You do not have to build a perfect archive.

Memory was never a museum.

Some details may soften with time. That does not mean the relationship disappears.

Write down enough that, years from now, you can still find your way back to the life you shared.
