Why Am I Still Grieving My Dog After Two Weeks?

I’m back at work and doing normal things—but grief still catches me in ordinary moments.

A normal home work desk with an empty dog bowl still waiting quietly in the background

It has been two weeks since my dog died.

I’m back at workI’m answering messagesI’m eating better

From the outside, I probably look almost normal again.

But I don’t feel normal.

From the outside, I probably look almost normal again. But I don’t feel normal.

1. People don’t ask as much anymore

During the first few days, people checked on me constantly.

Now the messages are quieter.

I understand.

Their lives kept moving.

Mine did too, technically.

But sometimes I want to say:

I know it has been two weeks. I still miss him today.

2. I can work, but my mind still disappears

Sit through a meetingAnswer an emailFinish something on my list

Then suddenly I remember him.

For a few seconds, everything else becomes background noise.

I’m functioning again.

That doesn’t mean I’m finished grieving.

3. I’m starting to wonder if I should be doing better

Two weeks sounds like enough time to make me question myself.

💧Should I still be crying?
🏠Should his things still be here?
💭Should I be thinking about him this much?

Then I remember:

I didn’t love him for two weeks.

I loved him for years.

Why would I expect my heart to adjust on a deadline?

4. I’m letting normal life come back slowly

This week, I’m not trying to prove that I’m okay.

I’m just letting a few ordinary things return.

  • Do what I need to do today
  • Eat and sleep as normally as I can
  • Say his name when I want to
  • Keep his things until I’m ready
  • Let myself have good moments without guilt
Some hoursfeel almost normal now.
Other hoursdon’t.

Maybe that’s what this part looks like.

Not “moving on.”

Just learning that I can keep moving and still miss him at the same time.

The world moving forward doesn’t mean I have to move at the same speed.

Two weeks is not a deadline.

It’s just two weeks.
